Google Chrome: New Extensions, New Apps
Add-ons is a huge factor which made Firefox fun to use and it seems that Chrome has taken notice. With the promise of a faster and stabler browsing experience, Google releases Chrome 4, with an impressive array of new extensions, hoping to turn over the avid IE or Firefox user.
What to look forward to.
These extensions, which are similar to a phone applications, employ the same multiprocess technology to save the browser from slowdowns and crashes. So say you’ll be using an app called “TooManyTabs” (which you are using expectedly because of a lot of open tabs on your browser), you can still expect smooth sailing even while you are using “Google Wave Notifier”, an app which displays number of unread Waves in your Google Wave account and “FastestFox, once a FireFox add-on which helps auto-load pages, speed up searching etc. The apps mentioned also happen to be some of the most popular downloads from the Chrome Extensions library. Other apps of note are “AdBlock”, “AdThwart”, “Google Translate” and “Google Mail Checker”.
Developers will also be happy to know that HTML and JavaScript APIs are supported. Included are Web SQL Database, which allows local storage of structured date; WebSockets, which sends data back and forth over a persistent communications channel; and a Windows-only notification API that passes non-disruptive updates in the user’s status bar area.
